We have been living as a family in New Zealand for the last 4 years or so but always knew that it would be for a finite period of time. We were keen to return to the UK, but wanting to discover a world between, and what a perfect opportunity to take a little diversion when relocating from one side of the world to the other.
We arrived back in the UK for a month before heading to Battambang, Cambodia on a volunteer project with Inspire Volunteering in May 2014. There was never a plan for the what next.
We have a return flight to the UK for Christmas 2014, maybe this will be the end of this Asia phase of our journey, and the beginning of the next. We don’t really know.
For the first time in our lives we wanted the opportunity to take it slow, to follow an itinerary that could unfold as we learn about places, about ourselves and about our children.
Where are we now?
At the end of our volunteer project we headed north for a 2-week travel through Laos. We took the decision to return to Battambang to continue to work as volunteers, this time for an NGO, See Beyond Borders. Now you have joined us and here we are, in Cambodia!
Annie is the mother, the wife. Born in London to a military family and spent many former years moving around the UK and Europe. Annie is not new to life on the road. Travel was part of her life from the day she was born. Living in Europe began a lifelong love of culture, languages, exploring new territories. It was an exciting childhood, always on the move and always unexpected.
As an adult Annie has lived and worked in the UK, US and New Zealand. Annie loves to connect with people, learn about people, share life with people. Annie’s career has been exactly that, in the world of digital communications using technology to connect people, but in the private sector.
Annie’s Sunflower Journey is a personal journey of learning, observation, reflection. It is precious family time, and also time to reach out into development work and find my niche in the Tech for Good sector.
Jonathan is commonly known as J as he could never spell Jonathan as a child. He is the Husband, Father and third child of the family. Born in Liverpool and still a Scouser at heart, although a posh one. Travel as a child was always by Boat, Train, Bike or Car and never ever by Plane as his father would not fly that was either through fear or his Accounting Background.
As an Adult Jonathan joined the family Accounting Profession and helped grow a successful Marketing Business in Bath. In 2000 Jonathan met Annie and the world became smaller overnight and plane journeys a regular features.
Jonathan’s journey is a journey of Analysis. The Analysis of people, places, experiences, and every day happenings. What we take away from each and every event is what will ground our family and dictate what really makes us happy.
Oscar (Oz, Osci, Ozy)
Oscar is the eldest boy, age 8 at the time of writing. Oscar has countless energy. He is passionate, loving and kind and a larger than life personality. Oscar has incredible observations on the world around him and we often wonder if he has “been here before”.
Oscar means “Divine Spear” and supposedly people with the name Oscar (according to Google) have a desire to understand and analyze the world they live in, to learn the deeper truths. However, they also like detail and order, and often find change worrisome. They may sometimes feel insecure or restless. Sunflower Journey is to teach Oscar to not fear change, perhaps the greatest gift we can give him to face an ever-changing world ahead.
Zachary (Zac, Zachy, Zacharoons)
Zachary is the younger brother, age 7 at the time of writing. Zachary is a loving, caring clever boy. At peace with himself and a dear friend to all.
People with the name Zachary have a deep inner desire for love and companionship, and want to work with others to achieve peace and harmony (again, thanks Google!). As unique, creative individuals, they tend to resent authority, and are sometimes stubborn, proud, and impatient. Sunflower Journey is to teach Zachary to be confident and proud, and with a bucket load of moral imagination to carry forth into the world.
